Peeling away onionskin layers of cultural overlay, it looks like the story of Theseus in its pre-Achaian form had Ariadne as the priestess who initiated Theseus in the Labyrinth (Labry, lip, like Labrys, the double-bitted axe, sacred to the Great Goddess). Later Theseus, either personally or a tribe by that name under his aegis, overthrew the earlier regime.
